Zombies Calling

WHAT’S THE COMIC ABOUT?
Zombies Calling is a 112 page graphic novel published in November 2007 by SLG Publishing. It was written and drawn by me, and was my first published comic, after years of doing online comics. Zombies Calling is about three friends, Joss, Robyn and Sonnet, and their attempts to survive a zombie invasion by following the Rules of Zombie Movies. You know those cliches that seem to pop up in pretty much every movie with the term “walking undead” in it? Doesn’t it make sense that following those rules would help you survive a real life zombie attack? Makes sense to me. Thus, Zombies Calling.

WHERE CAN I BUY ZOMBIES CALLING?
You can get it at most better comic book stores (stores with a good indie selection), like my local shop, Strange Adventures. Or you can buy Zombies Calling online at Amazon.com/.ca or directly from SLG Publishing. You can ask any bookstore to order it in, which they should do with a minimum of fuss, and I’ve been told its popped up occasionally at better Barns & Noble bookstores.

THE EVOLUTION OF ZOMBIES CALLING:
Zombies Calling was my very published graphic novel. It was published by SLG Publishing in November, 2007.  In the beginning, Zombies Calling was a one-joke short comic about a ridiculous action movie cliche (the ‘ordinary person instantly become a badass ninja when accosted by zombies/serial killers/terrorists/Mickey Roarke). Later, because I liked the characters and the idea of doing a tongue-in-cheek zombie comic, I developed a story around it, involving university exams, student loans, and the lack of zombie-killing weaponry in Canada. Trust me, if it ever came down to a zombie invasion, we would be very unprepared. All *I* have to defend myself with is a potato masher…

THE ORIGINAL ZOMBIES CALLING COMICS (2004):
Below is the original comic, in all its goofy glory. It’s worth noting that I was not trying very hard at all with the artwork, and it was back in 2004 when I drew it, slouched on my bed (I now sit primly at a drawing desk. Miss Manners would be so proud). The published comic doesn’t look ANYTHING like this, but it retains a certain charm.

THE PITCH COMIC (2005)
After Demonology 101 wrapped up, I decided that I wanted to give this whole print media thing a try. So, during a bout of unemployment, I drew up a 15 page proposal, recycling the first ZedC joke, and sent it off to SLG. A good while later, long after I’d given up and moved on to other things, they contacted me about publishing the comic. Yeah, I was pretty shocked.
